  • Another day, another fantastic podcast. For those who are new to podcasts, trust me when I say that they’re better than watching TV. :)

In Design Matters with Debbie Millman, Debbie interviews all kinds of creative professionals about their stories, process, and philosophies. As a wannabe-designer, this to me is gold!

For this particular episode, she talks with Grace Bonney, the creator of the prolific interior design blog, Design*Sponge.

  • The Last Post by Derek K. Miller

I was reading a post on Elliot Jay Stocks’ blog where he wrote about a blogger named Derek K. Miller who asked his relatives to publish a posthumous goodbye message on his blog upon his death to cancer. Be sure to read it here.

It’s a depressing thought, but what will happen to our online profiles and websites and blogs (which we have used to document our whole lives) after we die?

Allow me to be clinical for a moment…

So I did a bit of research and I’ve decided to use DataInherit which will send my sister all my passwords to all my online accounts when this happens, so she can let everyone know of my condition and then close all my accounts. I will also download all my Facebook albums (with photos that date back from 8th grade) on to an external harddrive so that there will be no problem closing that account.

I sound prepared but this plan is not entirely foolproof. Mr. Miller had the fortune to know that he would soon die so he had time to write that post, but I may not have that same liberty. And what if my sister kicks the bucket alongside me? My parents won’t know how to work an FTP program to close this website. Also, I’m only 17 so I don’t own a super secure vault in some bank to store this information…

…I’ll get back to you once I find a better way.

  • TCAF + OCADU Grad Exhibit

Let me first apologize for this is overdue recap. For the past three weeks I’ve been occupied with WORK WORK WORK and have been busy attending art shows, fashion shows, and art festivals.

I guess the bright side of having a busy lifestyle is that it gives you more things to whine blog about, so expect more posts from me soon.

Anyway, TCAF. Say what you will about comic conventions or in this case, “comic arts festivals”, but let me just go ahead and say that I had a blast. There was so much talent under one roof that for the first few minutes, I really didn’t know what to do with myself. I just walked in a daze.

I admit that I’m not quite adept in the world of comics as say, my friend Dorothy but color me enlightened. There is a whole wide world outside of manga and it is amazing!!! A few notable illustrators I discovered through TCAF: Katie Skelly, David Huyck, Colleen MacIsaac, David McGuire, etc. etc. etc.

After TCAF, we went out for sushi and then walked over to see the OCAD University grad exhibit. We didn’t get to see every section of the show due to time constraints but what we saw of the Illustration, Graphic Design, Photography, Painting and Drawing students has me suddenly feeling highly unworthy to attend OCADU this September.

I didn’t take any pictures but this girl did. A lot of the best stuff came from the Illustration students and they have a special website specifically for them.

Some cool grads I hoarded business cards from: Elly, REW FOE, Ivan Sharko, Joanna Ju, Sabrina Scott, Mike Ellis Caitlin Russell, Joo Young Kim, Xiao Han, and Lauren Kaiser.

I didn’t really expect to get anything that day but check out my swag (click to enlarge):

Okay so most of the things I got were business cards, postcards, and other free handouts but hey, they were the cheapest things there and they are like little pieces of artwork in and of themselves.

The books I bought at TCAF: Lucy Knisley’s newest book, “Make Yourself Happy”, Kate Beaton’s “Never Learn Anything From History” and Hellen Jo’s “Jin & Jam” which is the badass comic in the photo above.

I managed to get 2 out of 3 of those books signed! Lookie:

  • This is a shout-out to my mom whose infectious laughter truly turned my crummy day around. Thank you for my life and for all the love. Oh and let’s not forget the food!

This is a photo of her standing in front of a photo print shop which was her first job. I must say, she was really rockin’ that printed shirt.

Comme des garcons. Chelsea.

During our art trip to New York last November, I (along with a bunch of students from my high school) went in here thinking it was as a small art gallery similar to the gallery spaces in the surrounding area. We kept going in and out of the rotating glass door that the Comme Des Garçons-clad doorman/security person/employee started looking ticked off, hahaha!

I cried a little inside when I discovered that the PLAY converse sneakers—one of the few things I can afford from CDG—wasn’t sold here. I’m just grateful that I got the opportunity to touch, smell and be in general vicinity of their Fall 2010 collection.

It smelled good.

  • It wasn’t until I saw the exhibitor list and realized how many artists I adored were attending that I suddenly became very excited for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

Just a few from this great, big pool of talent include Joy Ang, Hellen Jo, Scott Cambell, and Kate Beaton (who drew this AWESOME “Tiny Hermione” comic among others).

It’s happening from May 7th-8th at the Toronto Reference Library. I can’t wait!
